hi am a postgrad dr from nigeria and would like to know if mccee is more important for working in canada to usmle.what are my options really?

  7. May 14, 2010 4:32 pm

@lola: Well, you probably know how difficult close to impossible is to work as a doctor in Canada if you are an IMG. There is a chance if you go to Canada as a fellow (you need to have a specialty from your country), work for 1-2 years, they like you very much, and give you an opportunity to stay as a staff, even without taking any of the MCC exams. This is possible but the chance is very slim. Way more opportunities if you pass all the USMLE exams and apply for US residency program. They say that after the new health care bill kicks in, there will be a high demand for any medical professionals in US.

Hi, I am a IMG from Colombia South America, in the process to emigrate as a skilled worker. All the information I receive from blogs, forum, people is that is almost impossible to work as a doctor in Canada. If it is true, so, why is the reason for this country to stimulate inmigration of doctors, if they don`t want doctors practice medicine in Canada?. I understand that we must pass all the tests, but it is not clear why don`t help to IMG to integrate to work.
I woould not like to arrive to Canada and have to work as a taxi driver or something else, while in our countries we practice medicine.
So, what is the importance of permanent resident status if we can not work in medicine?

      Guillermo R

      • June 9, 2011 2:44 pm

        Guillermo;

The federal government has all the intention to bring medical professionals to Canada with the intention of working. The problem is that the provincial authorities that issue your license are not in any way subject to federal policy, so, even though there is a high demand for physicians currently, the provincial authorities control who does and does not get a licence.
The concept of Canada being a unit and sharing policy is wrong, every province has it’s own body to control the medical practice.

    pupsib ali,

The best thing is to start with writing your mccee and mccqe1. It’s important for foreign medical grads to have these exams done first. You have to register first online with the Medical council of Canada and Carms.

    Hi polo,

For studying you should try either Ultimate Review books or Ottawa Notes. You can get both online at their websites http://www.ottawanotes.com, and http://www.mcceereview.com.

There is a book on the ultimate review website called IMG’s guide to CaRMs, and IMG’s Guide to PCRC. Those books take you step by step through the online application process.

    Hope that helps a bit

Hi i’m M.D russia.i wanna work in canada.so i need 2 write mccee.where can i get nice coaching centre? Plz help me

    • October 24, 2010 7:23 am

If by “coaching center” you mean a tutoring or learning center, then really the only one in Toronto or GTA are the Kaplan centers. However, from personal experience, the people at kaplan try to sell you their books and programs (average $2000). For mccee there are a couple of study guides you can try. Many people use Ottawa Notes which also has evaluating exams and gives a free copy of toronto-notes as well. The other is ultimate review books and their question books. Good question banks to use online would be usmle world or the kaplan question banks for step2. I wouldn’t recommend canada qbank because their questions are not difficult enough and they don’t have enough detail in their explanations.
      Best of luck.

you need to start by registering for the first canadian board exam (MCCEE). You also need to register with the MCC and PCRC online. I used two books to help me with this process because it can be very confusing and can delay your process if not done right. The books are:
IMGs Guide to PCRC and IMGs Guide to CaRMS. You can get both books at mcceereview.com.

can anyone tell me whether there is exemption from mccee after passing usmle part 1 how will i kw.

I also would like to kw whether high score in canadian exams matters in getting
residency.if so which exam is having highest weightage – i understand there are 3 parts. Apart from score are there other factors influencing to get into residency.
It appears that canadian exams are tougher than its counterpart usa exams.

Well, connections always help, even more than good scores. You need to find an observership or research and get to know more people that can recommend you.

Canada is a good place to live if you are a pizza pizza driver or painter, but if you want to be a physician is a different story.

I happened to find this forum by chance while looking for free mcqs for mccee. I did my mbbs long time back and am in the process of canada immigration. I started going through toronto notes few wks back for mccee. How are ottawa notes different from toronto notes? How many volumes of ultimate review books are there? Are these mcqs?
Reading about how difficult it is to practice in canada, even after passing required exams has put me into depression…:(

      Hi Ambreen,

I thought I’d share some personal experience to help you get started. First of all, don’t get discouraged by what people say.. if you really want to pursue medicine there’s no harm in trying, and many people have been successful. Firstly, you need to register with the MCC (medical council of Canda). You also then need to prepare for and write your medical board exams, the MCCEE and MCCQE1.

Getting the right study materials can be tricky and that’s where most students get confused. Here’s my personal recommendations based on what I’ve used and succeeded with. If you have 3 months or more, then I strongly recommend using the ottawa notes because it also has good audio lectures and comes with a lot of good information from basic to advanced. They also give you over 1000 questions with explanations so you don’t have to invest in question banks. The sections on Canadian health law and ethics is important in the exam and the usmle books don’t cover that.
If you have less than 3 months to study, then I would recommend using ultimate review because it’s a more focused review. They also carry some good material on how to apply for CaRMS and PCRC (other registration you need to do for licensing). Make sure to do as many questions as possible.. both sources have very good questions that have similar level of difficulty as the exam.
If you want to do online question banks, then you should use either Kaplan Step 2 or USMLE world question banks. I would avoid canada q bank because their questions are not properly explained and people have reported errors as well. Also the difficulty level is not that high in those questions. With any of these question banks you should try to score 85% or higher to do well on the actual exam.

Make sure to also get free questions from ottawa notes (they will email you a free diagnostic test if you send them an email from their website) http://www.ottawanotes.com and also from http://www.mcceereview.com. You can also get free questions from http://www.mccqe1.com.

Hope that helps you get started. Good luck [:)]

        Hi Umer,
First of all thanks for reply , i found it Very encouraging and kind.
I have some queries, hope you can throw some light on them as well. First of all, i have not yet registered with pcrc, though i have opened my account but havent paid them or sent the svr. I am through with my medical and if everything goes as expected , i should have the visa by coming summers. Do you think i should go ahead with registration process, and get the test authorisation no from mcc , even though i might not be able to appear for mccee in pakistan, or should i wait for the passport request and for the immigration process to move further ahead ?
Another thing, i have started preparing for mccee with the help of toronto notes as per everyones recommendation who had successfully appeared for exams and it was the first time time that i heard of ottawa notes on this site. I do have usmle world and am enjoying doing mcqs from there, plus i also have the ultimate review series and canada q bank, both of which i find relatively much much easier than usmle world. What do you say? For canada legal aspects of medicine, i guess toronto notes would be enough, am i right?

        Looking forward to your guidance/comments.

        Best regards,
        Ambreen

When I bought the ottawa notes I bought the ultra package because you get a bigger discount. Also, the audio lectures were really good and easy to understand. Don’t worry about the toronto notes because when you buy the ultra pack they will give you a free copy of toronto notes.

      Hi Jawaria,
Firstly, you need to register with the MCC (medical council of Canda).
