US Smoking Rate Stalled at 21%

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says nearly 21% of Americans smoke, a figure that has not dropped since 2004. Federal health officials suggest that these numbers indicate that smoking-prevention efforts have “stalled,” and are commensurate with the resources that have been invested in tobacco control. Cigarette smoking remains the leading preventable cause of disease and death in the US, resulting in approximately 438,000 deaths annually, the CDC says.
