Odynophagia and Dysphagia

October 5, 2007

OdynophagiaàPainful swallowingàwhen you have pain you say Ohhh!
DysphagiaàDifficulty swallowing

It is kind of a weird, because the term for painful menstruation is dys-menorrhea. Logically the term for painful swallowing should be dys-phagia, but in this case there is a different one, odyno-phagia. Don’t get confused.

Some patients may have non-obstructive esophageal dysphagia. The esophageal lumen appears normal on endoscopy or barium swallow but patients still complain of food hanging up in the esophagus.
